I used to wonder why God didn’t send the Incredible Hulk or some other Super Hero with unbelievable strength, X-ray vision or sonic scream to save mankind — after Adam and Eve messed up. Why did he wait nearly 4000 years to send Baby Jesus?
A few years ago when I donned a Wonder Woman costume and became Super Writer in my daughter’s second grade class, I had an ah ha moment. I was sitting on the floor with my cape trailing behind me, my arms covered in kryptonite bracelets, trying to force second graders to write 5-sentence, fully developed paragraphs — about something really interesting. Ha!
I had brought in my shell collection from Sanibel Island and was pointing out the Fighting Conch, the Lightning Whelk, the Angulate Wentletrap and the Lion’s Paw to 25 young faces. Finally, I held up the Crucifix Fish, the back bone of the lowly sailfish and asked, “What does this look like to you?”
One excited student who had been rolling around on the floor hopped up and yelled out, “That’s Jesus on the cross.” I was kinda surprised.
Then a quieter boy with curious eyes whispered, “I didn’t know fish believed in Jesus.” I instantly fell in love with that innocent, unassuming little kid. I wanted to talk to him even more.
It was then I realized why God chose Baby Jesus, an innocent, unassuming infant, to make sure people fell in love with HIM — to build a life-long relationship with HIM. As Pope Benedict XVI once said, “God has made himself small for us. God comes not with eternal force, but He comes in powerlessness of Love, which is where His true strength lies.”
It seems, God gave us the wonderful gifts of unconditional LOVE and absolute FORGIVENESS when Jesus was born. I wonder what we will do with those gifts in 2024? Store them on a shelf? Save them for ourselves? Share them with others?
One thing I found out after years of battling other shoppers at Christmas time — you don’t have to have super powers to celebrate Jesus’s birthday — you just have to come to Him like little children full of faith and trust.
Merry CHRISTmas, Everyone! ~ Love, Jan xoxo
It’ll Be OK.

COMMENT: HOW ARE YOU CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR?
I love this! One of my favorite newer Christmas songs is "Baby Boy" by For King and Country. Here's the first verse:
If you told me all about your sorrows
I'd tell you 'bout a cure
If you told me you can't fight the battle
There's a Baby Boy who won the war
The war was won by a Baby Boy
Endless hope, relentless joy
Started with a Baby Boy
Merrry Christmas, Jan! Thanks for sharing these beautiful thoughts today.
Jan, you always know what to say, and how to say it. Thank you for listening to God and sharing those words with us. Merry Christmas and a joyous New Year to you and Al.
