It’s my birthday today! I’m 78. And I finally understand what my mom meant when she said, “I felt young until I remembered how old you kids were.” And in my case, that also includes a lot of my former students who are in their 60’s now.
But, honestly, I find younger people exhilarating. My daughters are my best friends. And I really like working on community projects, traveling, directing plays, going out to lunch, playing golf and kibitzing on FB with younger folks. I never think about our ages; I just think of them as good, fun friends -- that is — until one of them moans, “Gees, I’m getting old,” and I want to slap them with my Medicare card.
My “younger than me cast” that I loved from M*A*S*H
I had to chuckle the other day when one of my younger friends posted a quiz on FB that supposedly tells how old you are. All you have to do is give yourself one point for every one of the items you have used in your lifetime. Here’s the list. I tested myself.
Rotary phone, Floppy Disk, Typewriter, CD, Walkman, Boombox, VHS, Blockbuster, Cursive, Atari, Fax, MySpace, AOL address, Encyclopedia, Phone Book, Dial Up Internet, Postcards, Paper Maps, Dictionary, Cheques, Curled Phone Cord, Camera Film, Hair curlers, White Out
Yep, I’m old. How about you?
I think I may have come up with a better test to judge age, however. It’s called “What’s In Your Medicine Cabinet?” It actually was an ah, ha moment when I was searching for band aids, and they were hidden behind some surprising stuff.
When had my Midol & tampons become Mucilax & Depends? My Noxzema & Clearasil; Wrinkle Cream & Concealer. Who replaced my Sun-In with Magic Root Coverup and my Estee Lauder Body Lotion with Gold Bond Crepe Corrector? And I’m sure there were little hand weights stored where the box of Icy Hot Lidocaine Patches are now.
Well, it’s my birthday today. And I can assure you Life can be good at 78. You just can’t fear being the oldest in the room anymore. Ha!
As my mom used to say, when we’d be struggling at golf, “It’s still better to be on this side of the grass.” So raise your glasses high. (You can do it.) Here’s to all of us being — young-at-heart. Cheers!
Oh, and I threw my Dr. Gundry’s Dark Spot Diminisher away. It doesn’t work. Ha!
It’ll Be Ok

Happy Birthday, Jan! You carry youth in your soul. Celebrate life with optimism and gratitude. A big hug. 🥳🤗💛
While I haven't reached my 70s yet, after sitting in our truck most of the day yesterday, my 60 something body is complaining like it's 78. As they say, getting old is not for the feint of heart. Today I will try to walk out the kinks. But staying young at heart, like you are, is the best way we can age! Happy birthday, Jan! Have a fantastic, fun, young-at-heart day!
