No one ever told me that when I aged I would become really obsessed with throw pillows. It seems while others are out there worrying about saving the world, I’m just sitting here trying to decide if I need some throw pillows with my new guest room bed spread. To throw or not to throw — that is the question?
No there’s no denying we have problems in today’s world, but it seems as if MY battle is more with the $5 bin of throw pillows at WalMart.
No matter where I go, my eyes dart to throw pillows. Even with all the wonderful souvenirs in Greece, I brought home a pillow cover featuring a windmill from Mykonos Island.
Well, at least all my pillows have good memories or positive affirmations attached to them. Maybe there’s something to this obsession. Maybe it’s telling me it’s finally all right to put down my sword and quit trying to be Don Quixote. Maybe trying to make a difference in smaller ways is better than fighting windmills.
I have to admit at my age I feel hopeful about the world’s survival. Every time I see my fox pillow I think about the one that visited our backyard religiously one spring. That beautiful species, which has been around for 12 million years, actually encourages me to trust our chances. When I see the symbolic butterfly, I am less troubled and more energized by the ideas of renewal & transformation. And I still get chills looking at the photograph I took of the nearly 2000 year-old Roman Colosseum hanging above them.
The little “Be Thankful” pillow on my rocking chair that peeks out at me every morning reminds me how lucky I am to be part of our Ram Nation right here, right now in Upper Sandusky. After all, in another 15 years I’ll surely be gone.
No matter how imperfect it is, civilization has existed for roughly 6,000 years. The United States, itself, is getting ready to celebrate its 250th anniversary in 2026. I’m a small part of a local planning committee for the semiquincentennial, working to recognize Ohio’s contributions. And there are other committees like us all over the country looking ahead. I am excited that as we’re reflecting on America’s past, we will also be inspiring the future.
Wait. A. Minute. I just thought of something. Do you think they’ll have a 250th Anniversary throw pillow???
Oh, I hope so.
As John Mellencamp once said, “An honest man’s pillow is his peace of mind.”
It’ll Be OK.

QUESTION: HELP! What do you think? SHOULD I GET THROW PILLOWS FOR MY GUEST ROOM BED? xoxo
Absolutely - your pillows have messages for you.
Well, Jan, I will leave the decision up to you. Looks like you have done a fabulous job so far. Thanks for sharing the pictures with us. You have a real talent for decorating. I also am a member of the “Too Many Throw Pillows” club. Love them! I especially like the fact that yours hold so many memories. I, like Cathey, feel they give a cozy and comfortable feel to a space. Happy decorating!
