What a tribute to a great lady . Most schools could not function with out an Evie. They are the unsung heroes . My daughter is in education. She loves her job She loves her kids. She says her support staff is something you don't do without . Thank you for remembering these forgotten heroes.
You are right about that, Susie! I told my daughters, both teachers, make friends with the custodian & the secretary -- they actually run the place. hee hee! xoxo
I agree, Susie, I have always said the secretary is the heartbeat of the school. In my 32 years of teaching I can honestly I always had amazing secretaries in
where I taught. My student teaching mentor teacher told me the people to get in good with were the secretary and the custodians. She was right!!
My daughter and a friend worked in the office with Evie one school year, she even gave them a graduation gift when they were off to college. A very generous person.
My husband and I did have a special family like that in our life and the matriarch is still around and is just as wonderful. Do not get to see her as often but always make the effort to see her when possible. Glad you made me think. I must write a note she is 89.🙏🏻
Oh, yes, Rita ~ check in with your amazing friend. Evie was 89 when she died. I think the isolation from Covid killed her. She needed people. I didn't really get to see her much for those 2 years. I really regret missing out on those times. Thanks for reading my blog. xoxo
Wow, everyone needs an Evie in their life! I loved the part about the cedar closet and the cheerleading uniform flapping in the wind that is truly a servant heart!
Thanks, Tricia ~ she was the most generous person I know. When my older daughter was doing her senior piano recital at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio -- 3 hours away -- Evie and her husband Don appeared in the audience to support her. Like everyone she had her peccadillos, but they were definitely forgivable. Ha! xoxo
I absolutely adored her. I would go to her house as a child trick-or-treating and I was blessed to help her in Office in High School. She always was so kind!❤️
What a dear soul - no wonder you miss her. One of my kids' school secretaries actually gave CPR (mouth to mouth included) to an iguana who fell out of his tree in the science teacher's room. Amazingly, he came back to life! Some special people always go above and beyond and make life better for everyone around them. Thanks for sharing Evie's story!
Jan what a wonderful tribute to Evie. Though I didn’t have an Evie. I had multiple teachers tak me under their wing and help me with my schoolwork including my Mom. I thank God all the time for them. I see one teacher once a year when we can. So I guess I had multiple Evie’s.
Jan and all who loved Evie: you lucky dogs! The secretary at my high school was a pinched nosed witch. My first year there, some club had put out a nice array of goodies after school for the staff. I went in the office and offered to answer any phone calls for her so she could get a plate. She looked at me with the most threatening look I believe I ever received before or after. She would not allow anyone to touch her territory, And the poor folks who called the school received a lesson in terseness.
Oh, Patty -- I hate that you had that pinched-nose woman for a secretary -- but you did make me laugh. Thanks! I worked in a parochial school for a couple years. (I'm not Catholic.) The first nun I met was a dream. The second principal was evil dressed in a nun's habit. So I get ya'! Sure makes a difference. {{Hugs}}
Great story Jan. Yes, I’ve met several Evies. I’ve worked in 3 different school districts. And most of the time they are the heart of the school. I will say one of the schools I worked at, the middle school principal was the “Evie” at that school, without being acknowledged, because he didn’t want to show favoritism, and that was always done behind the lines, so no one else would know. I was a para educator at that time, and I worked the school lunch, and there was always a group of staff that pooled their resources so students could have what they needed at school. Thank you for sharing this and for reminding Me about my school working days and the good times along with the not so good times. You are always a blessing with your stories. Blessings to you.

Hi Karen! It must be a universal rule about the custodians & secretaries. What blessing they are & what power they have. hee hee! xoxo

Oh, she loved Rachael. There's something in my mind about little red cars. Did they both have them?
Yes! I had a red Honda Prelude that Rachael inherited and Evie loved it and found one just like it bought it!
OMG, yes, that was Evie ~ she liked my bedspread so the next thing I knew she had one just like it. Ha!

Such a beautiful tribute to your friend Evie. 💛
Thanks, Elaine! xoxo
Thank you so much Jan for sharing these great stories about Evie!! What a beautiful side to this lady that, I'm sure, many of us didn't know about! XO
Right, Brenda! I know the students saw the busy-body side of her a lot. ha ha! xoxo

What a wonderful blessing, Shari -- to have that many. {{Hugs}} xoxo

Too bad everyone doesn’t have an Evie in their lives....such a better world we would be living in! Beautiful tribute to your special friend!
