Oh Jan what a fun (funny) story, could only be you! I could visualize it all, but I also loved when you told Tricia about keeping your papers etc. in your clothes in Greece. I’ll have to think on that when we travel for two months this year. Part of it will be in Crete at the end of August! Keep keeping us entertained, Thank you, hugs😍😂
Lovely writing! My first trip out of the country was to the UK, January 1982, my sophomore college trip with 21 other girls and 2 professors. (I went to a women's college the first two years.) We got stuck in a snowstorm, had to stay an extra night in a hotel in Wales, my roommate and I woke up to discover that the tap in the tub had leaked all night and there was an inch of solid ice in the bottom. No wonder we'd been cold! The bus driver was named Paul and all of us developed a crush on him, even though he had a face like a rat and a heavy Yorkshire accent. (Again, girls let loose out of womens college.) And I managed to trip on a cobblestone my first day and break open a healing ingrown toenail, which meant that one of the professors - I think Professor Goode, English, long beard, loved Guinness beer - had to inspect it every morning before I put my socks on . Good times! Oh, and the nasty Oxford students, when we asked them where to find a good hamburger, gave us directions to Wimpys. We were green as grass. But had SO MUCH FUN!! Thanks for the giggle.
It really was & you can imagine Julia Morris trying to lead us around. We turned every French word into Spanish by adding an O. Of course, Mrs, Baron didn’t find it funny. 😂
I giggled throughout! Thank you for sharing these stories. I am thankful you all made it back to the US in one piece. Such fun memories! Happy 4th of July! 🇺🇸❤️
Yes, did you know you can't return to the US without your passport? I guess there's a black market where they sell stolen ones. You can't say I don't learn from mistakes. Last fall on my trip to Greece, I wore my important papers inside my clothes. Ha ha! Happy July 4th, Tricia!!!
Haha, this is a great memory. It reminded me of my first trip overseas at 18 with a group of girls from school. Fun times! Happy 4th, it is certainly great to be an American, even in tumultuous times.
Have laughed picturing you and your cohorts taking on Paris. This reminds me of our experience in Barcelona. My SIL was jumped and had a wrestling match to keep his wallet, with my daughter jumping on the guy’s back to try to make him stop. Fortunately, a local came to their aid by coldcocking the guy and ending the wrestling match. As we calmed down from this experience, we headed to the train, where two of us were the victims of being pickpocketed. What an experience! I was very American in my expletives after I got up from having my knees taken out from under me. My daughter( same one that helped her husband) went after her so I had to jump off the train to follow. As we are doing this, we hear my ex-husband’s “SOB” I’ve been robbed! All 6 of us managed to get off train and finally meet up w/ my daughter….she didn’t get the gal. Fortunately, only a little cash and our Dr licenses, insurance cards were taken and not our passports. We headed to the police station to report the incidences. Here was my chance to shine…my daughters speak fluent Italian and handled our weeks in Italy beautifully. I was the Spanish student, albeit many moons ago, but I rose to the occasion. Ha ha , thank goodness I brushed up a bit before the trip. Never did I imagine I’d have to use it in the police station! I thought I’d be ordering food and wine! At the end of our dealing with the very handsome policeman, he said, “ you know, Barcelona is the #1 pickpocket capital of the world!” I told him if we would have know that we would have gone to Madrid! LOL!

Thanks! Hope you let me know how your trips go. {{Hugs}}
I’ll try to but I’m technology challenged mostly because I wasn’t interested for so long. Now I do kind of regret that but not always!!
Great story and we'll told. 🇺🇲🎆🇺🇲
Looking forward to your Substack, Karen. ❤️

OMG thank you for sharing your story. I loved it!!! So much fun hearing about your “green as grass” adventures. 😀 Happy July 4th!
Amazing experience.

Happy July 4th, Patti. I bet we'd have fun overseas together. Hope you have a great day today. {{Hugs}}
Haha, I did. No worries. That was supposed to be my name instead of Patti, my mother changed her mind at the last minute!
Gees ~ I hope you see I changed my name mistake in my first reply. I'm losing it in old age. Ha!
