We all know people in our orbits that think they’re the center of the Universe –parents who think their children are Star athletes, actors, musicians; people who think they know what’s best for everyone else on the Planet and those who erupt when a least bit offended. I’ve been guilty of some of these myself.
But there came a day years ago that I did meet someone who WAS out of this world, and it made me stop & think.
I was standing near a tee box at a LPGA tournament in Cincinnati, OH watching our favorite lady pro Emily (Bastel) Glaser getting ready to hit her drive when I saw Dr. Solacoff crossing the fairway with an older gentleman.
“Jan, have I ever introduced you to Neil Armstrong?”
OMG I had to bring myself back to earth before stuttering, “No, Doc, you haven’t. I’m glad to meet you, Neil.”
I knew Kotcho had been friends with Neil Armstrong since they were both Boy Scouts in Upper Sandusky during the 1940’s, but I had no idea he was bringing the Apollo 11 astronaut to walk with us on the golf course that day.
Every once in a while, I would sneak a closer peek at the American hero while we chatted about Emily and Upper Sandusky. I can remember getting chills when I looked down & saw his feet – the first feet to ever walk on the Moon.
Later in the day when word got out that Armstrong was following Emily, the reporters started showing up. His reputation for avoiding the limelight must have been true because he & Doc decided it was time to leave. I waved good-bye as they took off.
Neil Armstrong was one of the most humble men I’ve ever met. It would have been so easy for him to feel self-important, prideful after actually being 238,900 miles above all the rest of us on July 20, 1969. But he didn’t.
Sooner or later as we age, we realize it’s not about who we are or what God can do for us, but how we can serve Him -- as Armstrong said as he stepped foot on the Moon, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."
I love what his family said after he passed away in August 2012, "Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."
Help us, Lord, humble ourselves before you. ~ James 4:10
“I don’t mean to brag, but I put together a puzzle in 1 day & the box said 2-4 years.”

DID YOU EVER MEET SOMEONE FAMOUS? WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THEM?
Wink
I think people tend to think that legacies left behind after their passing should be grand gestures or fame, but for most people your legacy is many little gestures or interactions with others that impact them personally. Your story is testament to both! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing another well written blog Jan ! 🙏💜
