I feel you Jan, it’s not the easiest thing to grow a vegetable garden. I have also tried but failed sometimes because of the hot weather we have here all year long . The only things I have growing in my garden now are red chillies, basil, lemon , papaya and mango trees.

Sounds good to me, Irene, especially the mango trees! I planted a little basil & lavender in a flower box this year. They are really growing. I don't know what to do with them, but that's ok -- they look good! Ha! xoxo

Lol I had an animal get all my tomatoes last year but I planted another couple this year and they haven’t bothered it yet. I started growing my own food back in 2021 when Graham was talking about it and so I wanted to try. I’ve added broccoli, potatoes and a couple different varieties of lettuces. It’s been amazing just going to my backyard and pick all my lettuce and arugula to make my salads. I would love to expand but we will see. Take care, happy gardening 👩‍🌾 ❤️

Hi Cheryl ~ I'm waiting impatiently to pick tomatoes for dinners. We've had lots of cucumbers already. We don't have a lot of space, but there's a Farmers' Market in our community every Saturday so I can get loads of fresh foods. Now, I just need some motivation to cook... Ha ha! Happy gardening to you too! Hugs xoxo

We don't have a vegetable garden, just a garden with decorative plants and for the position of the house, near the sea, we try to take care the sea wind doesn't damage the leaves too much.

We have had cherry tomatoes but we took them out because they grew non-stop and took away space from the other plants. 🤗

Elizabeth ~ where you live sounds wonderful. You don't need a vegetable garden!!! Does it feel as if salt is all over everything though? When I'm at the beach, my glasses get so "salty" I can't see. But I really don't mind. ha ha!

Oh Jan how I love your stories. I understand though we’re you are coming from. Some have excellent gardens and others try try try. I planted a garden of veggies this year. I have summer squash like no buddies business then my radishes did not turn out at all. When planting them I was looking forward to eating them till I tried them. They were not very good had to toss all them away So I will try again next year. As you say try try again. Thank you Jan for sharing. Got to watch those wabbit’s

I can totally relate Jan! My husband & I tried radishes & cukes in pots on the deck with no success, then in the ground & didn’t work either. Bad spot, not enough sun. I so far this year have had success with a lemon tree, cherry tomato plant, pepper plant, basil, chives, oregano, sage, lavender, parsley & lemon thyme. Although I just killed the orchid plant from my husband’s Celebration of Life service! 😳🥲

Oh no! It sounds as if you've had some great success, but I bet you hated losing that orchid. I kill off almost all my houseplants. xoxo

Jan, love reading your blogs, always so fun. I have never tried a garden...living in the desert for 30 years where gardens are hard to grow didn't even try. Hope you get to reap some of the benefits before the rabbits!

Hi Linda ~ that's what I love about this blogging world -- learning about other areas of the country. Sometimes I just think about myself. Ha! Fingers crossed I get there before the rabbits. xoxo

The clay here in Georgia is so hard I tried my hand at container gardening. Squash, zucchini, cucumbers and tomatoes. Total bust. I fought the heat by draping a black screen over the plants. Didn't seem to help and the horned worm devoured the tomatoes. End of my gardening attempts.

Lynn -- I've got lots of tomatoes too -- just no red ones yet. They are getting lighter in color every day. I hope that's a good sign??? Ha! Sorry about the lettuce. Try cucumbers next year. I think even I can grow those. Fingers crossed. xoxo

We grew our garden when growing up in Va. Then we have had a garden up until couple a years ago. Canned beans. We now only have 3 tomato plants and 3 cucumber . Deer are eating our tomatoes . Cucumber are ok. Had a small apple tree squirrel have gotten them all. So I guess the animals win out. I guess the animals need it more than we do. Your post reminded me of the good ole days. Thank you

Hi, Susie -- we have a neighbor who moved in from the country. He has the biggest garden I’ve ever seen in town. It’s all fenced in, but he said 🦌 jumped it & have been feasting on his plants. I guess they do win out in the end. Glad the blog brought back good memories! Xoxo
