When I was younger, I could put on quite a show. Oh boy, I can remember a time when I was the star in a comedy of errors. Ha!
Picture a middle-aged cheerleading advisor with some Orange & Black skirts and sweaters slung over her back walking with teenage girls passed a crowd of basketball fans lined up for a high school tournament . When all of a sudden, the mother of one of the players yells, “Do you think you could get the boys on the floor right for once?”
I don’t know if she thought the girls had missed their cue or came in too soon at the last game, but – in front of that same crowd of basketball fans – I yelled, “Do you think your son could make a foul shot for once?”
OMG!
I am so thankful in my older age that Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor reminds us in her book Whole Brain Living that we can choose how we want to be in this world – that we don’t have to let our Left Brain Emotional Characters play the main part.
And even though there are others who demand our Character Two’s be more reactionary -- to rail at the injustices of the world, we can actually choose how to use our own Voices.
Now that I’ve grown, I HOPE to Spotlight my Right Brain Characters Three & Four – to be more creative and loving — to make the world a better place.
I recently directed the play M*A*S*H as a Fundraiser for groups that help children. We were able to raise more than $20,000 to “lighten their loads.”
One reason I had so much fun with the project is I got to portray Ms. Randazzle, the addled brained, old secretary to the College Dean. I haven’t been on stage for y-e-a-r-s so The Dean & I got off script sometimes. I almost died laughing the last night when all I could think to say after Dean Lodge announced Ho Jon couldn’t come to the United States if the 4077 didn’t raise enough money was “Oh no! Oh no! Oh, no, Dean!”
And Dean Lodge replied as we exited up the aisle, “Don’t worry, Ms. Randazzle, that’s what we’re here for – to fight communism.” I’m still laughing – it was so random it tickled my Character Three’s funny bone.
But, yes, that is what we ARE here for -- to fight injustices in the world –- in our own ways.
Darkness OR Dazzle
It’ll Be Ok.
