Oh my, this made me laugh so hard. I still haven't acknowledged that much of the world sees me as "old". The old school rules probably went overboard back in the day, but it seemed like we were a pretty civil society at least. There are different rules now about words that are unacceptable and people are offended so easily these days. It's probably best for me to just not say much in public settings. LOL

Cathey ~ I've had it happened several times lately & I still can't believe they're talking to ME. Ha Ha! I think we're in the "Anything Goes" society now. My teacher daughters say I could never be a teacher now-a-days. I wonder what that means??? Ha! (Loved your picture today. )

Great to take on the changing times. In this case. I prefer to be normal.

I keep trying to be normal too, Debbie -- but society keeps moving passed me too quickly. Ha! Can’t wait to hear about your trip to Canada with the girls next fall. Now that’s extraordinary! Xoxo

Ha! I can think of some odd things our families used to do... Firecrackers at Dillman's Lodge? Fond memories!

Fond indeed! So many truly great memories! Do you remember the story the son told us about his seeing the Muskie inside the sunken car?!

Yes we are normal. They are out of step big time. I was raised with the same rules as Jan. It was behave or else when we get home. My mom was the discipliner. My dad worked long hours but you knew to if you didn’t behave he was right there. My parent didn’t beat us but we knew the rules of our parents. So yes we said please thank you, yes Ma’am, yes sir. and we always called our elders by the last name unless other wise told. These days kids are not taught that. It’s a shame because the kids would be better off.

Everything has changed SO MUCH

I never dreamed I'd be hearing some of the comments I've said as I was determined NOT to sound like my parents but here we are 😳

You talk about being normal, I always thought I was, but what Does being normal mean to you? I think there would be many different answers to that question. As I’ve gotten older, I would rather be a Fruitloop In a world of Cheerios! Think that would really be a lot of fun, to make people wonder.

Blessings, Jan - this was a fun, Writing, As I grew up the same time as you did. It’s fun to read about the old memories.

Well, I think “normal” comes from the word “norm” which means something which is usual, expected. Doesn’t sound like that much fun anymore, does it?! Ha ha! Xoxo

You have such a creative flair in your writing, Jan. I so enjoyed this! Some of those statements have a sting in them for sure. I remember hearing many of them growing up. Thanks for sharing that!

Jan, this is so on target on so many levels! Thank you, it is a gift. I grew up in exactly the same way you did. However, while at university, my rebel family really came out. I marched and protested. When I became a mom, I was determined to do things differently. Now, I look back and pine for the “good old days “because I can’t abide the sloppiness of today. Thanks again for the beautifully written poem.

Ronja -- did you ever see the old movie “Breakfast Club”? I used to show it to my communication classes & ask them which character they liked the most. It was always the rebel. There’s something so great about rebels! Xoxo
