Oh how I remember watching Anerican Bandstand! And Ed Sullivan on Sunday nights. Oh yes, I Love Lucy, Life of Riley, Mr. Ed, Lassie and many others. We all had tape players just like we all have Smart phones now. Wonder where we’ll be in the next ten years! So happy to have found Heartland and discovered this wonderful movie star, Graham Wardle, and other cast members, who actually interact with their fans! Thanks for the memories. Great picture of you and your sister.

Hi Debbie ~ do you remember getting your first Walkman? I'm still using mine & getting quite a few stares. ha ha! Found Heartland during CoVid. My husband & I binged. Fell in love with the Amy/Ty story the most, but am finally accepting Graham is not Ty. Honestly, one of my favorite characters was the young Georgie. I loved her spunk.

Jan good morning I enjoyed reading your story again as I always do with your past writings thank you. Right now my favourite show is Heartland I quit watching after S14 when Ty died.I still watch the reruns of S1-14. I found HL during the pandemic and that is how I survived staying in my suite. I became attached to all the casts especially Ty and Amy.Lou and Tim they get into my nerves. I remember watching Dallas,General Hospital . When I was in the Elementary grades we walked to school rain or shine. My favourite game with my classmates was marbles we stopped under a tree and played before the bell rang. We did not have telephones and television when I was growing up.No Barbie’s,no housekeeping toys so we made our own toys. Now everything is instant children have everything. They are lucky growing children.

Oh, Elisa ~ I love the "we grow riper" comment! They say old teachers don't die they just lose their class. Oh, that's bad! ha ha! I loved General Hospital too. Have a good one! Are you glad you're home? Thanks for commenting. xoxo

Yes Jan I am glad I am home. When I got home we celebrated a big family event. It was the 18th birthday of my granddaughter. In our culture 18 is the start of a womanhood.18 guys give roses to the debutant and each will dance with her as each hands the rose . There were speeches by treasures and candles , people who are meaningful to her while she was growing up.It was held in the hotel. Thanks Jan for listening.

Oh Jan, what memories you have awakened in me. Your experience mirrors mine with my sister, only I was the one who got to turn the tv on ! I just love the pic of you and your sister. My girls always get a good laugh when they look at those “old time” photos! Sometimes obsolete brings much comfort.

Barb ~ I love old black & white photos -- and sisters! Glad you enjoyed the memories. Thank you for sharing. xoxo

As usual Jan great writing with that little bit of humour brought in. I could almost duplicate that photo with one of my own with my sister but I’m the oldest😂. However I’m not as up-to-date as you my photos are still in albums! I think your television in the 1950’s was more advanced than ours in England. I remember our programming was only from late afternoon and evening! My favourite show is Heartland. I have never been a big follower of many shows or soaps. There was just something about a young actor that spoke to me. Of course my viewing began November 2019 through the Covid fiasco. I was not one for any media sights or Facebook it just wasn’t of interest. But since.... I have to say he would be the only one I would have continued interest in! Thanks again Jan for bringing back memories. Hugs xxx

Never apologize for being long-winded, Rita! I love it!!! Yes, the Amy/Ty love story hooked me on Heartland. It's definitely not the same since Graham left and that storyline ended. Tomorrow's episode does look interesting, however. I'm into a new series now called New Amsterdam. It's a hospital story filled with a lot of human interest stories. For example: the head doctor has cancer & his wife is pregnant. Hugs xoxo

Jan I watched the early episodes of New Amsterdam and did enjoy it. I don’t know what happened in the meantime apart from we switched to streaming and lost some of our stations. I do think my husband has now found it to follow again so maybe he can draw me away from Heartland. He does not want to watch Heartland😕🤷‍♀️.

Great stories! Thanks for sharing! And by the way, I did know what that equipment was and yes, I am older than 50! Of course, Heartland! I do enjoy Virgin River, Sweet Magnolias, and When Calls the Heart as well! Blessings!

Tricia ~ have you seen the Netflix series -- New Amsterdam? It is a hospital show I just found. I'm liking it... Can't believe how many of the Heartland men actors are on Hallmark!

What's your favorite movie, Lucy? I love the oldies like Dirty Dancing, Top Gun, etc. Did you ever see Shawshank Redemption? Part of it was filmed in our little town. Thanks for the compliment on pic of my sister & me. We used to get all dressed up for Easter. My dad even bought us little orchid corsages. Nice memories! I'm really enjoying your trip. Thanks for sharing. xoxo

Would you believe I never had a Walkman?!! That’s how I discovered Heartland in 2021. I’m so glad I did. I especially like Graham, Amy, Geotgie, Caleb, and Scott. I found it absolutely amazing how kind and engaging Graham is with his admirers. He is toral class.

I can associate with the picture of the two sisters. You are the younger one, correct? I refuse to watch Heartland past Season 13. I have seen a preview or two on You Tube. It seems ridiculous to me. The actress they hired for Katie may be a great actress, but her height is ludicrous. I guess the Amy character is all that keeps people watching. I did catch the snippet in which Graham/Ty read the anniversary letter Amy finds. Do you agree that was Graham? Sure sounded like him. If so, that was nice of him to do.

Expand full comment

Yes, I'm the younger sister -- but am the middle child. You know what they say about that! I have a younger brother. I have to admit if Heartland goes off the air I won't be broken-hearted. Yes, that was Graham reading the anniversary letter. That segment definitely had punch to it. I cried. I'm sure he got paid well for those few minutes of work. Have a great day, Patty. It is dreary & rainy here today. We need some sunshine! xoxo

You did?!?! I pilfered mine out of the auction pile, when my school was getting rid of it. My husband LOVES Yellowstone. I think I might, but he says it's pretty crude compared to Heartland. Thanks for reading my blog, Lynn. I always love your comments. xoxo

Jan~thank-you for the trip down memory lane! 15 min soaps~ Search for Tomorrow and Guiding Light...stay away from Mom for this half hour or else 😅 Saturday morning 15 min cartoons/shows...Sky King, Mighty Mouse . When we purchased our first colored TV, that replaced our B &W, the first show we watched was Brigadoon (TV movie 1966...Robert Goulet, Sally Ann Howes). I remember it being beautiful!

Look at technology today and where it has us now and where it will take us in the future. Thank goodness for FaceTime, Zoom, Skype...just a few of the wonders that make it a Small World after all!

You’ve made me smile once again!😊

OMG, Cindy -- I remember all those shows! Brigadoon was our high school musical when I was a senior. Cyperspace is wonderful, but the space between you & me is too short for us not to get together. As soon as I'm done with M*A*S*H, I'm coming over to Lima to visit. Can't wait! xoxo

We walked home from school and stopped at each other’s house for a snack or playtime. One mother always watched “The Edge of Night”. We always walked in around the time this big wave came of the TV screen during the introduction. I think Peyton Place was the first soap opera I watched, because it came on in the evening. I still don’t know how to get TV programs on Demand. I cancelled cable because it is too expensive and nothing was good on it anyway. Netflix and Prime TV seem to be my go-to. I can’t honestly say that I have a favorite show, except of course, for our beloved Heartland . Thanks for these special memories of TV land while growing up.

Oh, Elaine ~ I forgot about "The Edge of Night." We certainly watched it too. I watch a lot of Netflix, but my husband is hooked to cable. Gees, it is expensive! I have watched certain episodes of Heartland a million times, but I'm finally getting a bit saturated. I was getting worried about myself. hee hee! I found a new Netflix series called New Amsterdam that I really like -- it's about a public hospital. Have you watched any of it? Glad you enjoyed the TV memories. xoxo

Expand full comment

I have watched New Amsterdam. I lost track of it after the season’s breaks. I follow Chicago Fire and Chicago PD on Ion TV. I used to watch Blue Bloods but got saturated with that. I am there with HL after watching and rewatching it so many times ( stopped counting). I felt like I was addicted and I started to worry about my obsession.

Expand full comment

Oh, Elaine, those are all the shows my husband LOVES. I'm glad to hear you say you were worried about being addicted to HL. That's how I felt too. I replayed especially the Amy/Ty scenes every day, and actually prayed about "letting it go." Graham's recent announcement about going into his cave was kinda a blessing. I'm finally not thinking about Heartland or THC very much. Glad to have met so many of you people though. xoxo

Ha! I loved this. The soaps! Guiding Light was my grandma's favorite as well. Mine was Days of Our Lives. Now we just get to dissect Heartland each week because of the magic of VPN. Such fun! And how awesome is the fact that friends can gather over the "interweb" and chat like we're in the room with each other? Progess is a good thing. This was fun, Jan, as your posts always are.

Your grandma's favorite?!?!? I'm not that old. Just kidding! I forgot about Days of Our Lives. That was a great one too. Can't wait until this week's episode of Heartland. It was interesting to hear Amber say that they aren't making Finn into a bad guy & that storyline will run through the end of the season. "See" you Sunday... xoxo

Jan, took me back to wonderful time ..younger years. I grew up on a farm so didn’t go home for lunch, ride bus to and from school. I remember our first TV...black and white, we got three channels most of the time, depending on the weather as signal would get interrupted during some storms. Do remember those “soap operas”...my parents watched As the World Turns” everyday after lunch..that was my Dad’s break from farm work. Saturday morning was our TV time, Lone Ranger, Roy Roger’s, Gene Autry, the westerns. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

Expand full comment

Oh, Linda ~ The Lone Ranger was a great one (and Tonto). Do you remember The Cisco Kid (and Poncho)? My maiden name was Zischkau -- pronounced Cisco -- so my older sister was always known as The Cisco Kid. And you guessed it -- I was Poncho. ha ha! Glad you enjoyed the walk down memory lane. I'm glad you went with me. xoxo

Great story Jan! Waves of memories flooded in as you described your early TV years. My first memory of a TV ritual was coming home after school, sitting in my small U-shaped, cushioned chair & watching the Micky Mouse Fan Club(I think that's what it was called) show. When I was a little older, I would spend time with my grandfather watching Perry Mason (I saw copy of one of the books in a small local Italian bookstore in Orvieto).

Now, I stream on my laptop or SmartTV. My most favorite show is Heartland (I've lost count on how many times I have re-watched the series) and my second favorite series is Silent Witness (BBC). I too use VPN.

I've taken the lead among my close senior friends with regards to navigating Smartphones.

Thanks for sharing your story.

Loved Perry Mason!!! That's so awesome you saw the book in Italy. Your trip was so amazing! I will have to check out Silent Witness. I've started New Amsterdam on Netflix. It's good! Giving myself a break from old episodes of Heartland. Going "into the cave" for awhile -- so to speak. hee hee! Thanks for reading my blog & commenting. xoxo

Jan, sorry for being so long-winded. I find I can’t watch easily past season 10 of Heartland so I commend your loyalty. Also I think it’s too early for Amy to move on! Just saying!
