It'll Be OK.

Ok, I’ll admit it.  I’ve never liked exercising – even when I was young.  While others were doing Jazzercise, Kick Boxing, Step Aerobics, and Richard Simmons Workout Videos, I was reading a good book.

As I’ve gotten older, however, I’m starting to realize  the old adage “If you don’t use it, you’ll lose use it” is true.  They’ve proven that  aging adults live a longer, healthier life  if they exercise at least 2 ½ hours a week.   Along with  maintaining one’s strength and balance, keeping a healthy weight is another reason to exercise. Obesity  is the number one factor in Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Doctors suggest walking, dancing and hiking as good exercise for seniors.

So along with my regular walk every day, I  decided to add a little dancing to my exercise.

 I put my earphones  on, found one of my old-time favorite songs  --  Trisha Yearwood’s “She’s in Love with the Boy” --  and headed out back.  I was excited; it didn’t take me  very long to remember some old dance steps.  With the first beat of the song, I became The Robot, abruptly starting & stopping, before sliding into Michael Jackson’s Moon Walk. Then  I started Twisting like Chubby Checker -- round & round, up & down the sidewalk before jumping into  The Freddie, raising my arms and kicking one leg after another.  It was The Mash Potato where I really got going – balancing on my tippy-toes, then swiveling on the heels of my feet.  My adrenalin was pumping as  I started flapping   my wings and wiggling my tail to The Chicken. I was thinking, “I’ll bet this is really good for my heart.”   

But, when I opened my eyes after ending with a perfect John-Travolta -Saturday-Night -Fever pose,  I saw a delivery man leaning against the fence doubled over in laughter.  “Nice moves, Mrs. Stoneburner.”

I don’t know if it was my “Alex-the-exotic-dancer move” from Flashdance  or my interpretation of Baby balancing on the log in Dirty Dancing that made him laugh the most.

I was so embarrassed I could have died from sudden cardiac arrest.  I’m not really sure THIS new exercise routine is going to work out.  Ha!
