The first time I got a hint I was getting older was when a student yelled out, “Hey, my grandma has a necklace like that. Where’d you get it -- the 1960’s?”
I laughed, “Well, yes, I did.“ I guess I had become vintage without even knowing it.
Several years later my new principal made it a bit clearer. He came storming into my room as my broadcast students closed their show with several measures of “Highway to Hell.” His eyes were bugging out, and he yelled, “If you can’t do your job right, you should retire!” Thank heavens, he warned me. Who knows what other terrible things I would have done?! (Wink)
After that, even more clues seemed to arrive daily in my mailbox.
“Use your Golden Buckeye Card for a 10% discount.”
“Buy Miracle-Ear.”
“Don’t lose your independence. Sunrise Senior Village.”
The AARP magazine asked, ‘”Is dementia in your future?”
“Stay home. Covid-19 kills the elderly.”
Thankfully, scientists say we have THREE ages: chronological, biological and psychological. Researchers count our revolutions around the sun, they record our biomarkers on a continuum, and they also study our attitudes about life. Sadly, many of the people around us on a daily basis only look at our birthdates and our cellular structure.
I started believing people were right about me being old -- until I went to visit my granddaughter in Baltimore. Luckily, there are people in our lives who can see what’s INSIDE.
“Grandma, wanta go to my yoga class with me before we walk up to the Thai
restaurant? We can make homemade bread for breakfast before we go to
bed. Oh, and I bought an awesome air mattress. You can sleep on it if you
want to.”
Surround yourself with those people – the ones like my granddaughter -- who can see your “heart.” It’s so much more fun!

(Let’s build a community of all ages – to ask questions, provide answers, gives advice, suggest aging tips, etc. Thank You! )

Very entertaining, and so, so true! I love the Billie Burke quote, as I devour my sharp cheddar.
