When I first retired, I vividly remember a hairdresser asking me, “Are you going to be like the other old ladies who can only do one thing a day?” I laughed. I thought that was the most ridiculous thing I’d ever heard.
I was the multitasker who walked two miles in the morning before teaching school all day, tutored a kid after school before going home to help my own kids’ with homework and to make dinner for my family. Then I supervised Prom work night, edited articles for the school newspaper, graded some tests, threw in a load of laundry and made a batch of cookies for one of my daughter’s 4-H meetings the next day – all before falling into bed at midnight.
Surprise! Now that I’m retired -- when I get up in the morning and see “Hair App’t” in big letters on my calendar, I’m happy, HAPPY that’s the only thing I’ve got to do that day. Ha ha!
I love this change of pace because I actually have more quality time to spend with people.
Honestly, I look forward to going to my hair salon every month or so now. I’m not just squeezing it in anymore. I love my hairdressers not only because they are excellent cosmetologists, but because they are also wonderful women. In the last couple of years, I’ve gotten to know them even better. Patty, Hellowee and I have even begun holding our very own Amaryllis Growing Contests. Because those two beauty experts with their magical thumbs are so kind, they only laughed a little bit when I unveiled my first pathetic entry. ha ha!
They’ve even volunteered to help me on their own time creating terrific hairstyles for the 4 gals in my production of “The Marvelous Wonderettes.”
You know psychologists tell us something we probably already know deep down inside -- demanding schedules often leave very little time for meaningful connections with others. We sometimes feel isolated and lonely, and those around us can feel rejected because we’re so busy. Relationships with friends, family, and spouses may suffer because of overextended schedules. With retirement you have more time to connect with friends.
Well, my second entry in the Amaryllis Growing Contest was a little bit better. It had more height – just no flowers. I’m going to keep trying though. I‘ve got the time.
It’ll Be OK.

WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU HAD MORE TIME FOR IN YOUR LIFE?
One of these days I'll be able to retire. Wish I could now, but it will happen in God's timing. Thank you for sharing and glad you're enjoying retirement.
I've always been an infamous "to do list" girl. Now that I'm retired, I still make the lists, but most things on them are optional. 😂
