It’s my birthday today! And my husband is giving me a really awesome gift this year. It seems Life has really changed as we got older.
~~~
When we were 21, we surprised everyone & eloped. I don’t know what we were thinking. We didn’t even have enough money for the marriage license. My hubby-to-be had to root around in his car console to find enough change to pay for our blood tests.
Then one day
We were sitting on the flowered couch in our one-bedroom furnished apartment -- the obnoxious place that featured plastic drapes with huge silver flowers and wool carpet with ugly red roses -- wishing we could “just” make $9000 a year. With the median income in Ohio being $7,200 back in the 1960’s, we were sure that we could handle my $900 tuition at BGSU and have some money left over if we did.
Gradually
In our forties we were able to start dreaming about going to Hawaii with another couple for our 25th wedding anniversaries. But since we both had kids in college by then, it turned out we could only afford to drive down to an exhibition in Columbus, Ohio called Amera-Flora. We laughed as we strolled around the Hawaiian display pretending we were on a romantic island.
Finally
Around the time I was 50, I could bring home a beautiful dark turquoise Trans Am convertible. I thought I would look really cool with my granddaughter in the back seat – our hair blowing in the wind. But when my husband saw me drive in with the top down, he announced, “ That car is not economically feasible!” I actually took it back -- because I was stunned he knew such big words. Ha!
But Now
I’m 77 and I’m so excited! I’m leaving on a 14-day tour of Greece with a couple girlfriends next week. I’m not sure if my husband finally thinks it’s “economically feasible,” or he just wants time away from me after all these years. Ha! Whichever…
It’ll Be Ok.
