OK, I’ll admit it – I’ve never been a good cook. Matter-of-fact, when I first got married, I was a complete disaster. I can still remember the first time I tried to make cream dried beef on toast.
Since the amount of milk I put in at first made it kinda runny, I added some more corn starch. Then I had to add more milk… then more corn starch… By the time I was done, it was the perfect consistency of wallpaper paste.
My husband has never complained. I’m grateful for that, but there WAS the one time I tried to make fried chicken and he refused to eat it. How was I to know that the middle of the crispy-looking thighs would still be raw after 10 minutes?!
Back in the early days women’s and men’s roles were clearly defined. My husband was to “bring home the bacon,” and I was “to fry it up in the pan.”
So, I kept trying. Recently, I appreciated my nephew sharing his favorite memory of Thanksgiving at our house: sitting at the kids’ table eating Kraft Macaroni & Cheese. OMG, Kraft Mac & Cheese???
Thank heavens he doesn’t remember me cooking the turkey with the neck and bag of giblets still inside.
I am so grateful that times have changed. My son-in-law Rick is a fabulous cook. The feast of turkey, mash potatoes, oyster dressing, corn casserole, green bean supreme, candied carrots, cranberry salad, homemade biscuits, pecan pie and lemon cheesecake was a blessing this year.
And there wasn’t one single box of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese around anywhere. Ha! I call that progress. We’re thankful for you, Rick.
It’ll Be Ok.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING, Substack Subscribers. Wishing you a fabulous year ahead.

“On Thanksgiving my mom used to get up at 5 a.m. to brine the turkey. She used to iron the tablecloth, too, but that ain’t happenin’ either.” ~ Maxine
COMMENT: WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR THIS THANKSGIVING?
Jan, thank you for the early morning laugh. I am grateful for the life I have had and to continue to have. Couldn’t ask for more! I can remember ironing sheets and pillowcases, along with tablecloths, dishcloths and handkerchiefs?? That stopped a long time ago now. Happy Thanksgiving and many more to come. Xoxo.
I was with both of my daughters this year on Thanksgiving day for the first time in over 30 years. It was wonderful, my oldest grandson and his wife hosted Both sets of families. My grandson is a plumber by day, but he is a marvelous cook. We all took a dish but we had A lovely meal. My heart was full, and it still remains that way. Almost a week later. But one year when I hosted The Thanksgiving meal, I too, made macaroni and cheese from scratch, because of a couple of grand children requests. Another fun story, Jan, thank you for sharing. Blessings my friend.
