When I first began this blog about the challenges of aging, I thought it would be fun to include a man’s perspective every once in a while. I invited Roy Henderson and a few other gentlemen to share their thoughts.
I first met Roy when he started coming to all the performances at the Star Theatre in Upper Sandusky. Right away, I liked this guy who grew up in the small town of Richwood, Ohio – “Where the Clock Chimes Hospitality.” We soon became FB friends. Along with getting to see the beautiful places Roy travels on his bike, I love the vintage pictures he shares.
You will see as you read his blog entry today that there are older gentlemen who cherish the past, yet still have faith in the future. Isn’t That Good To Know? ~ Jan

Roy: I grew up without a father from an early age, but I had six uncles, each affecting who I am today. I learned some excellent, endearing traits from them along with some orneriness and a few bad habits. When I was in my teens, I’m sure they all worried about us long-haired hippies with bell-bottom jeans. They had to be wondering what was wrong with us kids back then.
Now I can relate to how they felt since I am a grandfather watching Generation Z mature with their tattoos and cell phone addictions. But thankfully, I occasionally glimpse an image of myself in their blank-eyed stares. I believe they will do just fine in their own time. Even though they laugh at me when I try to use Snapchat or make some other generational faux pas, I can still see the love in their eyes as they laugh.
John Sebastian wrote the song “Younger Generation” in 1968, and I think these words still ring true today:
Why must every generation think their folks are square?
And no matter where their heads are,
They know mom’s ain’t there.
Cause I swore when I was small,
That I’d remember when,
I knew what’s wrong with them,
That I was smaller than.
“As a kid, my summers were spent barefoot. I could run across dirt, gravel, or asphalt. As an adult, I can barely walk through the grass without shoes. Just one of the many childhood superpowers you lose as you age.” ~ Roy But…
Don’t Worry…Be Happy!
Cause everything is going to be all right.
COMMENT: Please, welcome Roy to our Substack community. Thanks! ~J xoxo
