I’ve always forgotten things. When I was young, I’d forget to brush my teeth, feed the dog or do my homework. When I grew up, I still forgot things.
There was that time a student of mine was demonstrating how to skin a raccoon in speech class. We didn’t know what to do with the naked raccoon so the principal suggested we wrap it in some old newspaper and put it in the trunk of the Drivers’ Ed car. The Drivers’ Ed teacher would dump it in a field later that day.
Well, darn! I forgot to mention it to her. We laughed when she started smelling something a week later, and they had to fumigate the Driver’s Ed car.
Now, I notice I’m starting almost every sentence with “Oops, I must be having a Senior Moment” or “Did I tell you this already?”
I can’t remember where I took off my glasses or left my keys.
I forgot to put the tuna fish in the tuna noodle casserole and the ice cream back in the freezer.
I can’t remember if I paid that bill or returned your phone call.
I left my cellphone on the roof of the car and my purse at the theater.
I can’t remember why I went down to the basement or what I was looking for on the internet.
I forgot your name and my pin number.
Eventually, almost all of us start worrying about Alzheimer’s, I guess. But researchers say it is actually normal for the brain to experiences some age-related memory loss without it being dementia. They say it happens to all of us because we have a decrease in neurotransmitters and brain size as we age. And it can also be caused by sleep deprivation, poor diet and increased stress.
The good news is people with normal age-related memory loss shouldn’t worry. We can compensate for the changes by using lots of lists and other memory aids, by getting plenty of sleep, by eating healthy food, and by reducing stress.
But, did I tell you that already? Can’t Remember Shit
